UV CURING FOR THE HEALTH SCIENCES

    Efficient light penetration that doesn’t cause heat-induced substrate damage are benefits that manufacturers of medical products applaud in Xenon Corporation's UV curing technology. Since more than half of all medical devices are made from plastic—the majority of these from heat-sensitive polymers—excessive heat can put these materials at high risk of melting and cracking. Such devices as catheters, syringes, hydrogels, lubricious coatings and surgical sealants are all excellent candidates for pulsed UV curing.

The pulsed UV technology works in five ways to eliminate these issues: 1) the UV lamps operate at lower temperatures than mercury lamps 2) the short duration pulses operate too fast for heat build up 3) cooling occurs between pulses 4) high peak power eliminates the need for high average power and 5) the lamps can turn on and off in microseconds.

Of course Xenon’s pulsed UV technology has other advantages. Special configuration is one example. Example—the circular lamps that provide 360 degree illumination.

  Surface contamination is an issue that plagues a number of fields from food manufacturing and packaging to medical products to clean rooms. The sanitization powers of Xenon Corporation’s UV technologies are being welcomed enthusiastically in these venues.

Pulsed light is particularly useful in applications where continuous mercury UV fails to meet the requirements for complete DNA destruction, process speed, penetration, low product temperatures, personnel safety and process flexibility.
