High Speed, Low Heat 360 degree Balloon
Catheter Bonding & Coating With Pulsed UV Curing

RC500B System A common process in the medical manufacturing industry is the bonding of balloon catheters. This must be done with medical grade formulations, at relatively low temperature and 360 degree irradiation of the catheter. Further, because this is a medical application, there are typically very stringent requirements for testing the final cured bond strength and completeness. It is also desirable to cure both ends of the balloon-catheter interface at the same time.

Xenon Corporation engineers have developed two systems, Models RC-500B (Option4) and RC-600 (0ption2), that meet all of the requirements of this application. The heart of each system is a high output pulsed UV lamp coupled to multiple UV transmitting optical fiber bundles, 31 inches in length. Other fiber bundle lengths are optionally available.

The Model RC-500B (Option4) System consists of:

  • A 300 Watt power supply/controller, including digital timer and remote triggering capability
  • A five inch arc length pulsed UV lamp with choice of spectral range for high uv output
  • A complete lamp housing with built-in cooling, light shielding and four (4) high efficiency liquid light guides for 180 degree placement intervals at both ends or 90 degree intervals at one location.

The Model RC-600 (Option2) System consists of:

  • A 600 Watt power supply/controller, including digital timer and remote triggering capability
  • A ten inch arc length pulsed UV lamp with choice of spectral range for high UV output
  • A complete lamp housing with built-in cooling, light shielding and eight (8) high efficiency liquid light guides for 90 degree placement intervals at both ends.

The system choice depends on cure speed required and mechanical considerations. Either system, when used with any of several commercially available formulations, typically produces fully cured bonds in seconds. Consult the factory for recommendation of a specific formulation.
